If you're seeking a restaurant with stunning rustic decor and open atmosphere, look no further than Eveleigh. No matter where you sit, whether the garden-decorated front patio, wood tabled bar, or countryside-themed back patio, it's hard to imagine you're dining on the Sunset strip of West Hollywood.

We walked through Eveleigh's semi-discrete entrance on a quiet Saturday morning and were welcomed by polite servers, then seated at a wood tabletop and rustic metal style chairs right next to a mini water fountain. The environment was peaceful and relaxing, a nice change of pace for the weekend.

Unfortunately, the food at Eveleigh was the most disappointing aspect of the restaurant, compared to all the other trendy brunch places in LA. The brunch menu was already fairly concise, and I had to eliminate half of the options since I was looking for a breakfast-type of meal that's not oatmeal or toast. We ended up ordering the shakshuka and brioche w/ lox because they were the heartier choices.

The brightest part of our meal was no doubt the brioche and scrambled eggs. Instead of stacking salmon on top of an English muffin, Eveleigh got creative and swapped the English muffin with a housemade brioche that has a sweeter taste and a pillow soft interior texture. The edges of the brioche were perfectly toasted. The scrambled eggs were one of the best I ever had - fluffy, creamy and rich in flavor. I believe Eveleigh sources ingredients from farmer markets. I'd like to know where the eggs are from, they're amazing.

On the other hand though, the shakshuka was the worst I had in Los Angeles. Shakshuka is LA's egg dish of the year, inspired by North African cooking and adjusted for the local palate. It's not easy to pronounce, as whoever brought the dish over confidently announced "shank-shu-ka". Every brunch restaurant I've been to have cooked their own variation. The lowest common denominator has been poached eggs in a tomato based sauce, served in an iron skillet. Some chefs add spicy North African sausage, some add potatoes to the foundation, and at Eveleigh, the protein was chickpeas. The problem with this dish was that it was overly bland. It was missing the layered flavor of spiciness, so the dish ended up being too sweet and boring from the plain tomato paste base. Moreover, the shakshuka was too watery and the eggs were partially stuck to the pan, which I disliked. I would skip this dish here and go to Croft Alley on Melrose instead for it. In my opinion, Croft Alley cooks the most complex shakshuka in LA that costs less ($12 vs. $16 at Eveleigh), and even serves a slightly larger portion.

Finally, service was initially warm, but was less attentive over time. I wish I didn't have to ask for refills. I also wish the server did not rush to collect the bill (we had wanted to stay after our meal to chat). I found that odd because the front patio was only half full and there didn't seem to be any urgent need to turn tables.

Although the atmosphere at Eveleigh was memorable, the food (outside of the brioche and eggs) was not good enough for me to be a regular.

I happened across this restaurant while searching for another, actually. Upon arriving at the other, my group unanimously decided that we had to go back to try that 'really cute place with the garden in front' instead. Good choice. Okay, so, the 'farm fresh' thing may be a bit tired at this point, but the movement started for a reason: great food. Eveleigh delivers. It's a little quirky, a lot cute, and they serve up really good food while making you, simultaneously, feel good about your culinary choices (as in, I had some sort of green smoothie with farm fresh eggs, sausage, and avocado on toast). Oh yeah, order the Avocado toast. It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like, except the bread is freshly baked and the whole thing is carby, avocado heaven. Yum.
