Auckland, New Zealand

The Poor Knights Islands lay just 22km from the shores of New Zealand’s Northland. Uninhabited since the 1820’s they are the eroded remnants of a 4 million year old volcano. Submerged by the rising tides the islands play host to a dark Maori legend of death and destruction.
It is said that Maori tribes inhabited Aorangi and Tawhiti Rahi the two largest islands in the chain for centuries. Quarrelling over food with tribes from the main land the Chef set out with his warriors on a hunting expedition. Leaving the islands unattended neighbouring tribes took the opportunity to invade, murdering the inhabitants and destroying the village. Finding the death and destruction on his return the Cheif declared the islands to be strictly Tapu (spiritually restricted) and to this day no one has set foot on their shores. The English word ‘Taboo’ is said to have been derived from this Maori expression.
The Knights architectural beauty was sculpted during the last ice age, as water pounded the volcanic rock weaker areas collapsed forming vast sea caves, tunnels, over hangs and archways. With such a diverse underwater environment there is no wonder that it is recognised as one of the few remaining pristine eco systems on the planet.
The local inhabitants include countless species of fish and crustaceans, a wealth of corals and macro life and because the Knights plunge down to the sea floor at around one hundred meters they also play host to larger animals such a ray and sharks. Those fortunate enough to dive here will notice that the marine life is unfamiliar with the destruction usually associated with a human presence and so go about their business among the kelp in a fashion like nowhere else on earth.
Diving the Poor Knights was a surreal experience and one I would recommend to scuba divers of all ages and experience. The best time to dive is between November and April when the nutrient rich waters attract the most life.

"The best subtropical diving in the world." After doing it, I believe it. The Poor Knights Marine Reserve is so gorgeous. Sting rays, Blue Mao Mao, 2.5m long lobsters await your exploration. The largest sea cave in the world and loads of underwater and above water passageways to pass through. This is a can't miss if you're SCUBA certified on the North Island.

Dive Tutakaka offers a Perfect Day dive trip that includes two dives at Poor Knight's Island, which was one of Jacques Cousteau's top ten dive sites in the world. When I dived here in Feb. 2009, I used both my hooded dive vest and my 7.5 Henderson gold core wetsuit. The water temperature is a bit chilly year round, similar to diving off California.
