Camp 222 is actually located 222 miles from Norman Wells along the old Canol Trail and within the Northwest Territories. Mile Post 0 is actually just across the Mackenzie River from the town site. You can backpack all the way across the Canol trail, which is what Dr. Kershaw and his sons did last summer from this location. I think it took them about a month, which included well planned supply drops and some challenging river crossings.

Camp 222 consists of an old Canol Pipeline Project maintenance building, a weather station manned by a warden, an outfitters supply area (for high priced big game hunting), and a "rustic" bunk house/kitchen complex. I believe that the landing strip and the bunkhouse area were originally built by a mining company. And it was on that airstrip where I landed last summer in a de Havilland DHC-3 Otter that started my Earthwatch expedition.

After a breathtaking flight from Whitehorse, which included low altitude views of various mountain ranges, passes, river valleys, and mining camps, we landed on this modest gravel strip. I was surprised on how quickly the Otter could land and how soon we were on our way to the Dechenla Lodge at MP 212. At the end of this amazing Earthwatch adventure, we returned to Whitehorse in a smaller plane that gave me a whole new perspective on turbulence.
