Yerevan Vacations

Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia and believed to be one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. It is home to over 1 million people. In the Soviet era, Yerevan underwent massive reconstruction, in hopes to create a neo-Classical city with wide avenues to resemble Paris, Vienna, and Saint Petersburg. Central Yerevan is ... considered a fine example of early Soviet architecture. Public transportation is excellent and there are several museums, churches, parks, and historic sites to keep the visitor occupied for a couple days of sightseeing.

Yerevan is a friendly capital with parks, a handful of sights, and important churches. Fine for a couple days but there are more interesting places to see in Armenia.

This city of one million, the capital and largest city of Armenia, I was surprised in a very good way by. Yerevan has many open-air cafes, a wonderful square (Republic Square) where people gather each evening with high spirit, and rich culturally in the arts. One of the most impressive things are the statues, NOT dedicated so much to war, but those that made strong impact on the fine and performing arts. The photo attached is of the writer, William Saroyan.

You don't expect such a metropole in this area. But don't be mistaken, the 1.3 mio inhabitants know what it takes to enjoy oneself. All the posh shops are there, you can party until dawn AND enjoy the cultural highlights and art.

The history of Yerevan dates back to the 8th century BC, with the founding of the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BC by king Argishti I at the western extreme of the Ararat plain.[2] After World War I, Yerevan became the capital of the Democratic Republic of Armenia as thousands of survivors of the Armenian Genocide settled in the area. The city expanded rapidly during the 20th century as Armenia became one of the fifteen republics in the Soviet Union. In fifty years, Yerevan was transformed from a town of a few thousand residents within the Russian Empire, to Armenia's principal cultural, artistic, and industrial center, as well as becoming the seat of national government.

With the growth of the economy of the country, Yerevan has been undergoing major transformation as many parts of the city have been the recipient of new construction since the early 2000s, and retail outlets such as restaurants, shops and street cafes, which were rare during Soviet times, have multiplied.
