city is the leading cultural haven for a variety of traditional means of expression. Though there is truly an overabundance of beautiful ornate temples, a few most noteworthy specific ones to check out are Borobudur and Prambanan Buddhist temple complexes. The truly one-of-a-kind architecture of the stupas found at these locations are some of the most unique architectural creations ever constructed, and give off a sort of haunting mystical aura thanks to their stunning appearance. The list of attractions goes on and on here, with several UNESCO World Heritage Site and plenty of stunning natural attractions to go along with the man made ones. For a unique look at a culture that seems alien under the gaze of western-centric perspectives, Yogyakarta is a true showcase of mysterious beauty.

Yogyakarta is one of the foremost cultural centers of Java. This region is located at the foot of the active Merapi volcano, Yogyakarta was in the 16th and 17th centuries the seat of the mighty Javanese empire of Mataram from which present day Yogyakarta has the best inherited of traditions

The only province in entire Indonesia that holds special status because of its history and culture, it’s one of unique tourist destinations where the Royal Family still has the influence in running the city. A city that rich in history, culture, art, delicate dishes, and natural beauties from active volcanoes to beautiful beaches. It is also home to few important sites for Buddhist and Hinduism pilgrim. Yogyakarta is definitely a place that any traveler should make a stop while visiting Indonesia.

Jogja, as the locals call it, is where Indonesian domestic tourists flock to for old fashioned city Java. Here the Sultan is still in charge and it's possible to walk through the back streets and quiet neighborhoods an really get a feel of the fabric of this laid-back city. There are a few sights in town (Kraton and Water Palace) but really they aren't that exciting for foreigners. You be better off taking a walk or a becak ride around greeting people with a big smile. Get a sampling of the food in Jogja and do plenty of shopping for souvenirs. Don't forget to leave the city to see two outstanding sights--Prambanan and Borobudur.

Also known as ‘Jogja’, this central city is the heart of traditional Javanese culture, from gamelan to batik art to the Javanese language. That said, it’s also a thoroughly modern place and biggest traveler center on Java, far eclipsing Jakarta and offering things like wifi and real coffee that are scarce to be found elsewhere on the island. It’s the gateway to nearby wonders Prambanan and Borobudur, and virtually everyone in town is trying to book you on a tour to one of these places (or Mt. Bromo), but it’s also got a pleasant vibe (if you can ignore the scheming batik salesmen), and good lodging in all price ranges. You were going to come here anyways, so be reassured.

Jakarta, Indonesia

Yogya is considered one of the top destination for tourists in Indonesia because of many reasons: heritage places such as the Borobudur and Prambanan temples, the culture (the Sultan of Yogya is still in charge of running the city) and for its batik production. The place is more laid back than the likes of Jakarta, Bandung or Surabaya that you feel time moves slower.
