This is one of the city's oldest hotels and is located in the heart of downtown, within walking distance to many top attractions. The lobby feels old, which isn't something that most buildings in Phoenix feel like. Now, this is an older hotel and it feels old. The rooms are small. The doors creek when you open them. But the coolest part of this hotel is its history. Marilyn Monroe loved staying here. You can even book a room named after her that's near the pool, which is where she stayed when she was a guest. Mae West stayed here too as did Carole Lombard, Jean Harlow, Humphrey Bogart, Gary Cooper, Cary Grant and Gene Autry. Bottom line: if you're looking for a mid-level hotel with a great location and a really cool history.

The Hotel San Carlos, located in downtown Phoenix, was built in 1928 the last year of the "Roaring Twenties"and just a year before the 1929 Stock Market crash that helped usher in the Great Depression. During it's history it was known as the hotel for the hollywood celebrities of yesteryear. Clark Gable and his future wife, Carole Lombard frequented this hotel along with Mae West, George Raft, and other tinseltown luminaries. It is one of those historic landmarks that you will want to see, and walk around in even if you don't stay for the night.

Historic. Classy. Unique. The Hotel San Carlos, built in 1928, is in the heart of downtown Phoenix. And it's this Phoenix history that the hotel definitely plays up. Each floor is decorated in a specific theme. The second, where I saw a room, is covered with air force memorabilia. The third, where Marilyn Monroe stayed (in the hotel's only double-suite) is a virtual shrine to the late star.

Guests in the 20s didn't need much when it came to their rooms, apparently. That's the one downside I could see when compared to a more modern hotel: the rooms are on the smaller side. But what they lack in space they make up in character. The bathrooms: all original fixtures, but the TV and microwave were added sometime over the years.

And the rooftop pool! Great view of the city. A great place to stay if you're looking for something a little out of the ordinary (also ghosts maybe.)

Do you mean “Hotel San Historic?” I swear a ghost floated past me as I walked down the lavish corridor…but that’s what happens when the Old World meets the new. This ornate downtown landmark oozes history and whispers stories of the past. From its velvet draperies to gaudy (but cool) mirrors, traditions of the 20s, 30s and 40s fill the air, kitty cat. I was part of a film project that was shot in downtown Phoenix and The Hotel San Carlos was courteous enough to allow us to use their rooms to do hair, make-up and costuming. I guess they respect the movie-making process considering Marilyn, Cary Grant and Humphrey Bogart would frequent the place back in the day! If that isn’t alluring enough, the hotel sits in the heart of downtown Phoenix, which is making a name for itself with all of the action happening there now. Sports venues, restaurants, entertainment and museums are all within strolling distance.

When staying downtown if you want to deviate from the ultra upgraded high tech Hyatt or Renaissance and kick it old school with 50's class and style, Hotel San Carlos is where its at! Walking I was greeted as sir and immediately felt like I was Don Draper. I don't want to make this hotel sound like its not in good shape. Its awesome! The historical building has been well preserved and I was surround by class in all parts of the hotel. If you have read my other reviews of downtown then you know what I did next. Went to the rooftop pool and sun deck to catch a few rays and skyscrapers. The staff rocks as does the old school class. Thanks for keeping it real Hotel San Carlos!
