Birdsville is famous all over Australia as the site of the Birdsville Races which attract 7,000 thousand revelers each September and from the 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. In truth, Birdsville is a dusty windswept town which lots of flys and an extremely rowdy, overpriced, historic pub. But the several hours drive through the open Outback is worthwhile simply to see how the 115 residents of this town live. Hint: It's not easy, but the locals are hospitable enough to provide delicious curried camel pies at the Birdsville Bakery and the Tourist Visitors Center is more than helpful and packed full of local information. Also a trip out to the Big Red Sand Dunes is unforgettable.
