Fort McMurray is an urban service area in the Regional Municipality (R.M.) of Wood Buffalo. It was previously incorporated as a city on September 1, 1980. Fort McMurray is 435 kilometres (270 mi) northeast of Edmonton on Highway 63, about 60 kilometres (37 mi) west of the Saskatchewan border, nestled in the boreal forest at the confluence of the Athabasca River and the Clearwater River. Fort McMurray used to be a relatively sleepy Frontier town and is now the Urban HQ for Oil Sands Activity going on up North. The City has expanded rapidly over the years and features comfortable suburbs that surround a somewhat seedy Downtown. It's a hard life as even in good weather folks are looking at 12 hour days and up to a 3 hour round trip commute (in good weather). My impression was that most people are from somewhere else, the money is good, and folks look forward to cashing in at some point and getting out.
I actually liked this growing city... Especially pretty in the fall!
