A very friendly town where the Blue Nile River exits Lake Tana. There are colourful markets, warm friendly people and boat trips on the Lake to very old monasteries. Some are closed to female visitors. Many boats made from Papyrus reeds can be seen traversing the lake.
The lakeside location gives this town a bit of charm. A reasonable place to spend a day or two relaxing poolside (though you probably won't want to get too close to the lake itself). The tourism highlight here is a boat trip around Lake Tana and its monasteries. References to this being Ethiopia's Riviera are a bit generous.
Lovely city of bahir Dar is situated at the southern part of lake Tana.
Loved the new modern hotels and the monasteries
