The churches alone are world famous and worth the trip. There is little else in the town. Weather in nice and I agree, a good guide is a must. Hotel quality is better if you choose carefully

The monolith churches are pretty incredible and the artwork inside is quite unusual. While it's pretty cool just to wander the grounds, a guide is extremely beneficial. The town of Lalibela has little else save for a weekly market that yields some interesting photo opportunities.
