Guanaja is one of those islands that feels as if it has escaped the heavy tourism of other Caribbean Islands. Located about 100kms off the coast of Honduras, it consists of 2 main islands and lots of little cays, some inhabited, some not. The island is 7 by 12 miles long. There is only one road on the island between the villages of Mangrove Bight and Savannah Bight and everywhere else is accessible by boat. All shopping is done on a cay called Bonnaca and with no big name brands here it really is a haven of tranquillity from modern day life. The island sits on a reef that is the second largest in the world, so seafood and fish tend to be on most menus. The sea also provides a lot of the activities on the island, including snorkelling, diving, kayaking, fly fishing and sailing. But you can also go trekking, birdwatching and canyoning. The terrain is quite mountainous with the highest peak being around 1400 feet. The vegetation is a mix of lush tropical, mountainous, rugged, and more arid area and a lot of Pine Trees for which the island is named.
