Okayama, the capital of Okayama-ken, sits 730 km west of Tokyo. Founded in 1889, the city is best known for its monuments to its past. From feudal Japan to World War II and beyond, the city offers lots of history to explore.
This mid-tier city looks like most others in Japan but does have a nice garden, Korakuen, and a castle that are both worth visiting. A good jumping off point for Kurashiki or the islands of the Inland Sea but no real reason to linger.
