Be very careful in this city. The reputation is that people attack first and check for a wallet later. Armed carjackings on the open road are a reality, as are armed stick-ups in restaurants. All hotels have multiple armed guards, and large barbed wire fences. Walking around even during the day is not that safe.
All hotels, and most restaurants are way overpriced and the entire economy is heavily infected with dutch disease. However it is the gateway to the rest of one of the last mysterious places in the world. I place with pristine reefs, think forests, and over 860 languages. Go if you can handle the grit, and love the unknown, but get out of Port Moresby quickly and go see the country.
