Hue is around 3 hours from Da Nang by train. The train ride itself is a beautiful journey through jungle and mountains. Hue is a city like no other in the country. This old capital of Vietnam is where emperors once ruled the country. The forbidden city is an impressive UNESCO site, and every street and structure is cloaked in the country’s history. But today’s Hue also has a more modern atmosphere. There are some great hotels, nightlife, clubs and restaurants. It is well worth a weekend getaway from Da Nang.
If you have the extra time while visiting Da Nang I highly suggest paying a visit to Hue. You can take the train or pay a driver. This area is often missed and if you are a foodie has a very unique cuisine.
As part of our tour, we only stayed in Hue for 1 night. Unfortunately for us, this coincided with the huge tropical storm that took out half of the Philippines so the weather was an absolute downpour. I've never seen anything like the torrential monsoon rain of Hue. We decided to take advantage of the lovely hotel we were staying in to relax for the day (being on the road constantly in tiring!) and instead only ventured out for some drinks in the evening when the weather had let off a bit. I'll come back here not as part of a tour so that if things do go wrong and get cancelled, there is room for mistake.
Interesting to see the Chinese historical influence so concentrated here, as it was the former capital. Extravagant stone pagadas to gawk at.
