Cluj is a city steeped in history and tradition. It is considered to be one of the most important academic, industrial, and cultural centers in Romania. While there, you should plan a visit to Babes-Bolyai University and tour the magnificent botanical garden. The architecture in and around the city is a mix of Greek, Roman, French, and Russian.
Cluj is located in the center of Transylvania at the confluence of the Apuseni range. The city is surrounded by forests and grasslands.There are many rare species of plants found in this area, including the Venus Slipper. Old churches in the city are some of the most well preserved and beautiful. Many of them date back 500 years. There is a modern ski resort which sits atop Feleac Hill. This is about 31 miles from the city of Cluj. There are two summer resorts in the area as well. These are the Zidul Mic and Zidul Mare.
If you decide to see the countryside while in Cluj, you will be rewarded with sights like farms and castles. Most of the castles date back to the medieval period. Once, theBontida Banffy Castle was known as the Versailles of Transylvania. It is located outside of Cluj in the nearby village of Bontida. If you ask the locals for directions to Count Dracula's castle, be prepared for some goodhearted jeering and a lengthy history lesson. The remains of that castle are located in Târgoviște, Romania.
