When To Book A Flight To Cuenca?

Because the weather is the same year round in Cuenca, you should book your travel based around when Ecuadorians are likely flying into Cuenca for the cheapest flight. This means that you avoid booking during Christmastime and Easter. So long as you avoid those two periods, your flight to Cuenca shouldn’t be very expensive.

What To Expect When Arriving At Cuenca?

There’s no currency exchange at Mariscal Lamar International Airport, though there are several small shops and restaurants. To get from the airport to the rest of Cuenca, you can take the bus, which will drop you off on the central Avenida Espana. If you’d prefer, you can hail a cab or rent a car.

Cabs are abundant in Cuenca, but they can get expensive if the drivers know that you’re not an Ecuadorian. The bus system isn’t extremely reliable, but it keeps a rough schedule that, with a bit of walking, should serve your needs.

What To See And Do In Cuenca?

Cuenca is a city whose biggest sight to see is itself. People with an appreciation for Spanish architecture will be particularly pleased by Cuenca’s orderly piazzas and beautiful churches. The historical churches in Cuenca aren’t necessarily a must-visit if you’re content to look at the other beautiful colonial-era structures that are everywhere in the city, but they do have beautiful stained glass inside.

Aside from the architecture, you should check out the cultural museums in Cuenca, particularly the House of the Ecuadorian Culture, the Museum of the Aboriginal Cultures, and the Monastery of La Concepcion. These sites are gated by a suggested donation, but you’ll find that the rich historical and cultural content inside these museums describes Cuenca’s history from prehistory up through the present—quite a feat for three museums that are within a four-block radius of each other.
