Located about 120 miles to the north of Guam, the island of Saipan is part of the Mariana Islands archipelago. With flights to Saipan available daily, you can enjoy exploring the island's native beauty and military history. Because the island is only about 12 miles long and 5 miles wide, Saipan International Airport (SPN) is located near most of the major attractions on the island.

The airport has two paved runways and services about 100 flights to Saipan each day. Delta Airlines, Asiana and Fly Guam arrive at this airport from Tokyo, Seoul and Hong Kong. Once you arrive at the airport, you'll find duty-free shopping, restaurants and information booths. To get to your final destination, you can rent a car or a moped from one of the six rental car companies, or you can take a taxi to the downtown area, which will cost you about $30. Keep in mind that taxis are only allowed to pick up passengers at the airport and at hotels. If you intend to rent a car or a moped, know that the island only has two main roadways that will take you where you need to go. Beach Road follows the western coast and connects several small villages together. Middle Road travels through the center of the island.

One of the first things most visitors do is hit the beach. Micro Beach has clean sand and access to wind surfing equipment, jet skis and banana boats. Obyan Beach is a popular destination for going snorkeling to see the marine wildlife. If you want to go diving, visit the Grotto where you may see reef sharks and stingrays. To see sea turtles off the shore, visit Punta Sabaneta. This particular spot is also a historically important place in the Battle of Saipan.

Mt. Tapochao is one of the most popular spots to watch the sunset. If you want to find handmade treasures, head to Garapan Street Market on Thursday nights to find clothing items and all manner of street food. If you have a hankering for Filipino, Korean, Thai or Chinese food, you'll find exactly what you're looking for here. At Sandcastle Saipan, you can watch a magic show and traditional dances.

Hints and Tips for Visiting Saipan
In January, the Annual Saipan Marathon takes place at the American Memorial Park. Once the marathon is over, there are celebrations for all the participants. In March, the Annual Saipan Laguna Regatta hosts sailors from all over the world for the regatta race. The San Vicente Fiesta Saipan celebrates the island's patron saint with parties, parades, food and traditional music in April. The island also celebrates the New Year with fireworks, street competition and live entertainment. An average meal for two at a mid-range restaurant will set you back about $35. The average temperatures are constant throughout the year from about 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The rainy season lasts from June to November, which may make it more difficult to get around using bicycles or mopeds.
