DC’s manicured tourism area and gritty neighborhoods are very similar to Oakland’s. The downtown area of Oakland is well kept and is where most of the city’s cultural life goes on, but the outer areas of Oakland tend to be less slightly and may even be dangerous.

If you’d rather see Oakland’s vibrant theatre scene, head down to the Fox Oakland Theatre and see the AXIS Dance company or the Oakland Symphony orchestra. On the whole, Oakland will be about the same price as DC, but somewhat less walkable because of how much it sprawls in comparison to DC’s dense streets.
