What To See And Do In Cienfuegos

Cienfuegos is peaceful and balmy year-round, so it's feasible to spend a lot of your time reclined on the beach or checking out one of the city's many cafes. The beaches of Cienfuegos are clean and quiet and offer some of the most beautiful sunsets in the Caribbean over clear waters.

If you prefer nature-based activities, there are many waterfalls in the forests around Cienfuegos. The most famous is called El Nicho, which exists at the center of a tropical forest that's deafeningly loud with fauna. If you go at night, you'll find that the rainforest is alight with fireflies.

Cienfuegos also has a massive botanical garden--perhaps the largest in Latin America--and a cigar factor for those who would like to partake directly from the source. Strangely, Cienfuegos also has a Sea World equivalent, though there are only several dolphins in a tank and it's quite small.

Taking a walk around the quiet and orderly neighborhoods of Cienfuegos is a lot of fun, but the real fun will be for the history buffs. Starting with the Catedral de Nuestra Senora de la Purisima Concepcion or the Museo Provincial, Cienfuegos has history beneath every one of its many bricked streets. As is typical of Cuban cities, this history harkens back to the Spanish colonial era. Though notably, Cienfuegos' depiction of this era is much more forgiving than in other Latin American cities.

Cienfuegos is a UNESCO world historical site and is an exemplary instance of Spanish colonial city planning, architecture, and civil society. Because of these factors, Cienfuegos has the most neoclassical designed structures of any city in the Caribbean. Be sure to check out the Arco de Triunfo as well as the city's fortress, which is cool on the inside despite the summer heats approaching nearly a hundred degrees.

For sports fans, Cienfuegos fields a soccer team as well as a baseball team.
