Visiting Myanmar is a rewarding experience for the adventuresome traveler. Myanmar has 25 commercial airports, but international flights to Myanmar typically land in either Mandalay International Airport (MDL) or Yangon International Airport (RGN).

Yangon International Airport is Myanmar’s busiest facility for air passengers. One terminal is dedicated to domestic flights while a second handles international traffic; the two terminals are a five-minute walk from one another. Traveler amenities are limited to a scattering of self-service cafes and souvenir shops as well as several currency exchanges, a first aid station, and a desk where you can rent a car with a driver. The only other available transportation option is taxis.

Mandalay International Airport has a single terminal with amenities for travelers that include a restaurant, a post office, a bank, a currency exchange, a duty-free shop, and rental car facilities. Cheap flights to Myanmar are provided by low-cost carrier Thai AirAsia, which runs daily flights between Bangkok and Mandalay. The only way to get to the city, which is nearly 25 miles to the north, is by taxi. A shared taxi will cost you approximately $3 while a private air-conditioned cab will cost you approximately $9.50.

Mandalay was founded in the 19th century as the royal capital of Myanmar (then Burma.) The last remaining structure of the royal palace compound is known as Shwenandaw Kyaung. Other attractions in Mandalay include the teak Amarapura Bridge spanning Taungthaman Lake and Mahar Aung Myay Market, which is the world’s largest jade exchange.

Flights to Myanmar through Mandalay International Airport is the most popular way of visiting the ancient temple town of Bagan, which lies approximately 110 miles south of the city. Bus services are available in Mandalay to take visitors to the temple city. Marco Polo once described Bagan as “a gilded city alive with tinkling bells and the swishing sounds of monks’ robes.” Many of the stupas, pagodas, and ruins you’ll find here date back to the 11th and 12th centuries.

The most sacred Buddhist site in Myanmar is the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon. It’s a 325-foot-high gilded stupa that was built sometime between the 6th and 10th centuries. The stupa, which is made from hammered gold plates fitted over bricks, contains many holy relics including eight strands of hair from the head of the Buddha himself.
