Discover San Cristobal

San Cristóbal Island is one of the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador and is served by the San Cristóbal Airport, which is a short ride to the main part of town. San Cristóbal is a spectacular destination for tourists looking for an ecological experience that has no guard rails or glass windows preventing them from directly experiencing nature in the raw.

If you're planning a flight to San Cristóbal, be sure to use Skyscanner's flight search tool to see when you can finagle the cheapest flight. Flying to San Cristóbal is pretty expensive even though locally everything is inexpensive.

Expect to fly cheap during the rainy season, which is also a bit warmer and is from December until May. If you'd rather stay dry and don't mind temperatures in the low 70s instead of the high 70s, you'll have to pay slightly more from June to November.

Airlines That Fly To San Cristóbal

San Cristóbal is served by Ecuadorian regional airlines like Avianca Ecuador, TAME, and LATAM Ecuador. You'll need to book a flight from your home destination to a regional hub closer to Ecuador before these carriers are accessible.

What To Expect When Arriving At San Cristóbal

San Cristóbal is, like all settlements in the Galapagos, relatively relaxed and intentionally only lightly developed. You won't find any currency exchanges, and if you want to shop or go to a restaurant, you'll need to go into town, which isn't far by car.

Taking a taxi is the best solution, however, as their rates are cheap and you don't have much use for a car on San Cristóbal anyway. There's only one main road, and it connects the airport to the main part of town and terminates at the dock. If you're insistent about renting a car, check out our car rentals page.

What To See And Do In San Cristóbal

To ensure that you have a place to stay at one of San Cristóbal's few hotels, you should pre-book your hotel using our hotels page. Once you've booked your hotel, arrived in San Cristóbal, and settled in, it's time to enjoy nature as you've never enjoyed it before.

There are undeveloped beaches everywhere around the island where tourists--and wild animals--hang out. But don't waste your time sunning yourself if you're in San Cristóbal. Take one of the wildlife tours which originate from the town center, or if you're feeling brave, step off into the bush along one of the trails that start at the edge of town. If you find yourself back at the airport, you've gone in the wrong direction.

The best ecological finds on San Cristóbal are in the northeastern part of the island, so try to stay on that heading while touring around. Keep an eye out for exotic wildlife, which should surround your every step outside of town.

Remember not to interfere with the wildlife, as many of them are endangered by virtue of only living on San Cristóbal--not on any of the other islands of the Galapagos or anywhere else in the world. If you're more interested in marine life than the terrestrial life like the giant tortoises, there are regular snorkeling, scuba diving, and glass-bottom-boating tours that depart from the dock at the end of town.
