Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) is a gateway to Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic. Santo Domingo is the oldest city in the Caribbean. It is divided in two by the Ozama River and sprawls along the beaches of the Caribbean Sea. In the center of the city is the Zona Colonial, which contains colonial-era buildings that date back to the late 1400s. That portion of Santo Domingo is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city itself is an interesting blend of historic and modern architecture; it is very urban and known for its hot nightclubs and terrific restaurants.

Las Américas International Airport
Flights to Santo Domingo arrive at Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) on level 1. The airport has two terminals, A and B, which are located on the second level of the building. On the third level, there are offices and a food court. Travelers can find banking and currency exchange facilities inside as well. Many major carriers fly into the airport, the largest being JetBlue Airways. American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines and Air France also offer flights to Santo Domingo.

Outside the arrivals hall, there are minivans that provide transportation into Santo Domingo for a price that is much cheaper than a taxi. The average cost of a taxi from the airport to the downtown area is around $30 while taking one of the minivans will cost you around $2. The minivans only go to the Zona Colonial, however. There are rental car booths in the airport as well.

Attractions in Santo Domingo
The Zona Colonial was founded by Bartolome Columbus, the brother of Christopher Columbus. There, you'll find the oldest fortress in the New World, the Fortaleza Ozama, which dates back to 1502. Also located in the Zona Colonial is the Catedral Primada de América, a stone church that was built in 1514. The entire area is well preserved and is a popular destination for visitors. The Casa de Francia, originally the home of Hernán Cortés, who conquered the Aztecs, is now the location of the French Embassy. Many visitors stay in the Distrito Nacional, which provides good proximity to both the Zona Colonial as well as the nightclubs and restaurants.

Carnival is celebrated during the month of February. The city erupts in partying, and there are elaborate costumes and live music. The festival culminates with the city's celebration of Independence Day, at which they use live cannons and play the 1812 Overture. Santo Domingo has a vibrant, thriving nightlife scene with numerous discos, bars and nightclubs.

Dominican cuisine is similar to Puerto Rican cuisine and contains ingredients such as rice, red beans, meat and cassava root. Tropical fruit also plays an important role in Dominican dishes. For two people to dine out at a restaurant, you can expect to pay an average of $35 for a three-course meal. Average high temperatures in Santo Domingo range from 76 degrees Fahrenheit in January up to 82 degrees in July.
