Booking Your Flight

If you’re planning to fly to LAX via Columbus’ Port Columbus Airport (now known as the John Glenn Columbus Airport), you’ll need to book with us here at Skyscanner to get the best deal.

Along this route, you can pick between the following carriers:

  • Delta
  • Southwest
  • United
  • Alaska Airlines
  • American Airlines

Almost all of the flights along this route have a layover at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, though some flights have layovers at Phoenix’ Sky Harbor Airport or Denver. A few unlucky flights have two layovers, which adds a huge amount of travel time.

Though the layover locations have plenty of things to do, food to eat, and stores to peruse, Port Columbus Airport itself is extremely sparse. You may be able to pick up a bite of fast food but don’t expect to have a large selection or access to anything higher quality than a Burger King. There aren’t any dedicated newsstands at Port Columbus, either, so be sure to bring some extra entertainment for the road.

The concourse which you depart from will vary from airline to airline, but you should be aware that many of the gates at Port Columbus Airport no longer have functional jet bridges, which means that you’ll have to climb into the plane via a deployable staircase.

If you have trouble climbing stairs while lugging your stuff, you should plan ahead of time to ask for accommodations and factor a little bit of extra time into your arrival. The lines at Port Columbus tend to move a bit slowly, so factor in a little bit of extra time for that, too.

Flying Into Los Angeles (LAX)

Most of the carriers that fly this route have multiple terminals in use at LAX, so you can’t be sure which terminal you’re going to land in. Once you’re on the ground, be sure to turn your watch back three hours. Head outside the airport, and consider your transportation options.

Driving Around LA

LA is a city for cars, but that means traffic is perpetually stop-and-go. If you’d rather take your chances with the region’s unreliable public transit, you can hop on the metro bus, the regional bus, the airport to downtown FlyAway Bus, or the metro railway system. These systems have coverage that is largely non-overlapping, but massive sections of the city won’t have any coverage.

If you plan to stay in LA for a while, renting a car is probably the best choice, despite the time that you’re bound to spend sitting in traffic.

If you’d rather not rent a car, ride share apps are an alternative, but they’ll end up being quite expensive because of the time spent sitting in traffic. The same is true of taxis.

On the whole, LA is a much more expensive city than Columbus. Luckily, LA’s weather is notoriously beautiful, and the entire region experiences moderate warm temperatures year round.
