Tancredo Neves International is the larger of the two commercial airports that serve the sunny city of Belo Horizonte and its metro area. Most of the flights at this airport are to locations within Brazil and are handled by local carriers. There is a small amount of international service, however. American Airlines has service to and from Miami from Belo Horizonte, TAP Portugal offers similar service from Lisbon, and Copa Airlines can get you here from Panama City.
When Are Fares to Belo Horizonte Lowest?
Since Belo Horizonte is located south of the equator, seasons are reversed from what you experience in the United States. This means that the depths of winter in the US is peak season in this part of Brazil, with nice warm temperatures and plenty of festivals and celebrations going on. It's a fun and pleasant time to visit, but you'll likely see the highest fares from January into March.
Conversely, you'll tend to find the lowest fares during spring and summer in the US, which is Belo Horizonte's winter season. Don't let the word "winter" scare you off, however; located in a subtropical zone, the weather from May to September in the region is usually on the pleasant side, often in the 70s during the day and only dipping as low as 50 or so. This is also the time of year in which there is the least amount of clouds and precipitation.
Arriving at Belo Horizonte
United States citizens are required to have a visa (in addition to their passport) to enter Brazil. The visa is good for five years once issued and is relatively easy to obtain from any consulate or embassy, however.
Tancredo Neves International is a modern, good-sized airport with a good range of amenities and food options. A handful of 24 hour food options are available. Free WiFi and charging stations are also available throughout the airport.
Transportation from Belo Horizonte
Several bus options are available from Tancredo Neves International. Several city buses (lines 5250-5252 and 5270-71) make stops there and are by far the most inexpensive option, though getting large luggage on them can be a problem. An executive bus service (Unir) is also available and has space under the bus for luggage, and though it is about twice the cost of the city bus it is still very reasonable.
Unfortunately, the city's Metro rail line does not stop anywhere near this airport. Taxis are plentiful, however, and are known for aggressive pricing comparable to the executive bus fare but with direct service to your destination.
Tancredo Neves International is also well supplied with rental car options including Hertz, Sixt and Localiza.
Things to Do in Belo Horizonte
Belo Horizonte was originally designed to be the new capital of Brazil, and though that shift has not yet happened, it is one of the largest and nicest cities in the country and well worth exploring. Those looking for dining and nightlife options will find plenty to keep them busy - the city is colloquially known as Brazil's "capital of bars" and is a magnet for musical performers looking to make their careers. It also has a wide range of museums, historical sites, parks and a large lake for fishing.
