      Travel requirements to Kenya for American citizens

      If you're traveling from the United States to Kenya, the first step is understanding the visa requirements. Securing the right visa makes your entry into Kenya as smooth as possible. Let's explore all the necessary travel documents, visa types, and health requirements for American citizens visiting Kenya.

      Kenya visa requirements for American citizens

      Travelers must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to visit Kenya for Business or Tourism.

      Travelers can obtain a Kenya Multiple Entry eTA valid for five years, allowing travelers to enter and exit Kenya multiple times without reapplying.

      Travelers can apply online. Once approved, travelers receive their eTA confirmation electronically.

      Minors under 18 cannot apply for a Kenya eTA on their own; the application must be completed by a parent, legal guardian, or an accompanying adult.

      Travelers must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to visit Kenya for Business or Tourism. Travelers can submit the eTA application online. Once the application is approved, travelers receive their eTA confirmation electronically.

      The Kenya eTA is only valid for a single entry, except for in cases where travelers are visiting Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, or Uganda immediately after visiting Kenya, do not visit any other countries before returning to Kenya, and their Kenyan eTA is still valid upon return. Travelers fulfilling those conditions can use their eTA to return to Kenya.

      Minors under 18 cannot apply for a Kenya eTA on their own; the application must be completed by a parent, legal guardian, or an accompanying adult.

      The eTA requirement doesn’t apply to:

      • Travelers with an East African Tourist Visa issued by Uganda or Rwanda who travel directly between Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya without visiting any other country;
      • Travelers who are permanent residents or valid work permit holders of Kenya;
      • Cruise ship travelers who arrive and depart on the same vessel without disembarking.

      Travelers must have valid travel health insurance when entering Kenya. The insurance must provide a cumulative benefit limit of at least USD 50,000, including coverage for medical expenses, emergency medical transportation, prescribed medicines, mental illness, and repatriation of mortal remains, and must cover the entire duration of stay.

      Travel health insurance obtained in the traveler's country of origin may be used if it meets the prescribed benefit limits. If purchased at a point of entry, the insurance must be obtained from an insurer authorized by the Government of Kenya.

      Travelers need a valid passport to enter Kenya. The traveler's passport must remain valid for at least 6 months after the traveler arrives in Kenya. The passport must have at least 1 blank page.

      Travelers must have proof of accommodation during their stay in Kenya.
      If travelers will be hosted by a relative or friend, the host must have an invitation letter, an identity card, a passport or an entry permit of the family member.

      Travelers require proof of a ticket showing their entrance and exit from Kenya.

      This requirement doesn’t apply to the following travelers:

      • Nationals of Kenya;
      • Foreign nationals residing in Kenya.

      Travelers should consider:

      • Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccines;
      • Typhoid vaccine for visits to smaller cities or rural areas;
      • Routine vaccines including Polio and Measles;
      • Meningococcal vaccine for areas that are part of the meningitis belt during the dry season;
      • Yellow Fever vaccination (generally not recommended for travelers whose itineraries are limited to the following areas: the entire North Eastern Province, the states of Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, Malindi and Tanariver in Coastal Province, and the cities of Nairobi and Mombasa). Travelers visiting other areas are recommended to have Yellow Fever vaccination.

      Additional vaccine recommendations may apply. Consult your healthcare provider and check the source for details.

      Passengers who have been in the DR Congo or Uganda within the past 21 days must complete the Electronic Travelers Surveillance Form to provide their health and travel details before entering Kenya.

      Travelers can complete the form online before departure.

      After submission, a QR code is generated. Travelers should download the QR code for presentation if required.
