Attractions in Vieques
Much of Vieques is set aside as a national wildlife refuge. You can hire a guide or rent a car to travel around the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge where you may be able to catch a glimpse of wild horses and see birds and reptiles in their native habitat. Within the reserve are several beaches, including Caracas Beach, Pata Prieta Beach and La Chiva Beach. If you're looking for sandy shores that are a bit more interesting, you can head to the southwestern side of the island. Here, you'll find La Playa Negrita, a beach filled with black sand that originated from volcanic material.

If you'd like to see the sights from the water, you can go kayaking, snorkeling or scuba diving. During the day, you can see plenty of tropical fish through the crystal-clear waters. At night, you may want to take a tour of Mosquito Bay, a bioluminescent body of water. Thousands of microscopic organisms live in the bay and emit a bluish-greenish light when disturbed. The result is a dynamic, glowing hue that makes the ocean feel magical.

When you're ready to learn a little about the islands' history, you can check out the Fortín Conde de Mirasol, which was originally built in 1845 under Spanish control. Now, the fort is home to an art museum and historical displays, and it offers great views of the island. Another location with unobstructed views is the Faro Punta Mulas, a lighthouse at the northern shore. It features a small collection of artifacts.

Near the Faro Punta Mulas in the Isabel Segunda neighborhood are several hotels. Some of them are right on the shore whereas others are set up in the hills. Further south near Quebrada La Mina are accommodations that face the Caribbean Sea.
