Oakland is typically only mentioned in the context of being one of the cities of the Bay Area, but really it’s an entire city of its own. Oakland has a very vibrant arts and culture scene, with acts like the Oakland Symphony, AXIS Dance Company, and others. Areas like the Oakland Zoo, the Oakland Aviation Museum, and the African American Museum and Library complement Oakland’s Broadway to offer something for everyone.
Be sure to check out the Japanese botanical garden in Oakland, as it’s one of the city’s most peaceful and most beautiful landmarks. If you’re more interested in zany stuff than the regular fare, visit Franklin D Roosevelt’s personal yacht, the USS Potomac, or the Gertrude Stein Monument, which boldly states “there’s no there there.”
