Flights to Block Island State Airport (BID) reveal a historic New England retreat that has served as a vacation haven since the 19th century with its quaint towns, windswept beaches, yacht-dotted harbors and peaceful nature retreats.

With quick, cheap flights to Block Island and back, Block Island State Airport has one passenger terminal, catering services and public telephones. Airlines that  into the airport include New England Airlines and Tropic Ocean Airways. An in-airport diner serves up casual fare and an outdoor eating area where you can watch the planes land. Rental cars are provided, but many visitors opt for a taxi ride into town or a scooter or bicycle rental for inexpensive and easy island transport.

Much of Block Island’s appeal lies in its beaches, all beautiful and all public. Access the surf below the dramatic 200-foot Mohegan Bluffs via a steep set of stairs or just wander over to popular and convenient Crescent Beach in Old Harbor. For more seclusion, check out tucked away beaches like Mansion Beach and Charlestown Beach.

Streets lined with grand Victorian hotels, seafood eateries and lively bars characterize the town, where the Point Judith ferry pulls in several times a day. Barely a mile away, New Harbor is a bustling yachting center situated on the island’s protected Great Salt Pond, lined with boat rental shops, restaurants and bars.

Sitting atop the Mohegan Bluffs, the Southeast Lighthouse is a sprawling red brick edifice with a small exhibition hall. At the north end of the island, you can hike down the beach to the Block Island North light, tucked away among windswept dunes.

For those traveling with children, Baby Beach attracts families with younger guests. Island Free Library offers relaxing nature walks as well as story hour for toddlers. The 1661 Inn Animal Farm on Spring Street offers a chance to see exotic animals like lemurs and camels all year round. Horseback riding along the beach is also a popular activity available at Rustic Rides Farm, which also offers pony rides for children.

Hints and Tips for Visiting Block Island
May through October marks the busy season for Block Island, with visitor numbers peaking in the summer months. Average high temperatures in the summer reach the high 70s, and average lows in the winter hover around the mid-20s.

If you head out to Block Island in summertime, you’ll find plenty of nightlife in Old Harbor and New Harbor. Restaurants and bars across the island offer a lively mix of seafood, cocktails and live music throughout the high summer season. Mid-range dining costs can vary from just under $20 to $50 for two.

Twice a year, in May and September, visitors can attend the Taste of Block Island event, which includes tours, wine and beer tastings, and a number of shopping sales. The Block Island Music Festival takes place in June.
