Cheap Flights to Dortmund Airport
Dortmund Airport is an international commercial facility serving the greater Dortmund area. It's located to the east of Dortmund, a little closer to the small city of Unna. This airport serves a number of European budget airline companies and is particularly attractive to bargain hunters. Eurowings, easyJet, Ryanair and Wizz Air all have regular flights to this airport from major cities throughout Europe. Dusseldorf can be reached from here in about an hour and a half by taking an airport shuttle to the Dortmund train station.
Dortmund High and Low Seasons
Dortmund doesn't get quite as much tourism as some of the more popular areas of Germany, like Berlin and Munich. You'll likely see slightly elevated prices during the summer months, however, simply due to general travel and vacation patterns throughout Western Europe. Spring and fall are excellent times to visit, with minimal tourist traffic but weather that is still pleasant. The winter months bring the most inexpensive deals, but there is the possibility of freezing temperatures and snow during the day.
Though Dortmund is not a major tourist destination, the area has its share of popular annual events. The local Borussia Dortmund football club is one of the most popular in Germany, and their games can draw tens of thousands of visitors. Some other major annual events include the Dortmund Music Festival in June, the Micro!Festival in August and the exhibition of what is often the largest Christmas tree in the world in December.
Dortmund Airport Tips
Though small, Dortmund Airport has a decent range of basic amenities. The main gripe from travelers is a slow security check system due to a lack of metal detectors, but this airport also does not see the same heavy traffic a place like Berlin does. Unfortunately, WiFi is not free - it costs from €3 for one hour to €30 for 24 hours, though these cards are reusable (time is counted only as you use it). Cards can be purchased from the information desk pre-security or the West Bar snack cart post-security. Food and drink are available from the Confiserie Drüke sweets shop, Coffee Fellows, Restaurant Bella Vista and two snack bars.
Transportation from Dortmund Airport
An inexpensive shuttle bus runs throughout the day from the airport to Holzwickede Station in Dortmund. From there you can reach Munster, Cologne, Dusseldorf and a number of smaller cities and towns. Several local buses also stop at the airport and head to destinations throughout the region. Rental cars are available on the arrivals level from Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt and Thrifty.
Things to do in Dortmund
You can drop in just abou anywhere in Germany and see all sorts of interesting historical sights, and Dortmund is no exception. Some of the regional highlights are the Haus Bodelschwing castle on the water, Seepark Lunen lake, and the Heinrichenburg industrial boat lift from the 19th century. There are also quite a few interesting museums such as the German Football Museum, the DASA Working World Exhibition, the Ostwall modern art museum and the Borusseum football club museum. Speaking of the football club, a game is always a rollicking good time, if you can manage to get a ticket!
