Arriving in Portland

Portland is one of those rare cities that manages to offer all the amenities of a major urban center without ever losing the warmth of a cozy little town. Maybe it’s the rainy climate, or the proximity of so much overwhelmingly gorgeous wilderness, but there’s something about arriving in Portland that makes even visitors feel as though this place was welcoming them home.

Speaking of rain, a local would tell you to just zip up your jacket and forget it. And that’s what we advise, too. This place is too beautiful to hide indoors. Many visitors arrive here and then head for the mountains immediately -- and for good reason: there are any number of unforgettable adventures to be had hiking the trails.

Still, save some time to linger in Portland itself. Rent a bike or simply stroll around the historic neighborhoods to get a real taste of this friendly town. The food carts are up to gourmet standards, the coffee is unbeatable, and the local microbrews are incredible, so there’s always a good excuse to stop.

If you do decide you want a break from the weather, pop into one of Portland’s exceptional museums. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry is a fabulous choice, especially for families, and includes both an IMAX theater and decommissioned navy submarine.
