Rental cars are available directly from the airport from the usual chains: Hertz, Enterprise, Dollar, Alamo and so on. Additional options are available in neighboring Sanford. Keep in mind that the airport is a fair distance north of Orlando, and the major roads into the city charge tolls.

There isn't much in the way of public transit from Orlando Sanford. The closest bus stop is about two miles from the airport, and getting anywhere from there by bus will require so many transfers and so much time it is likely more economical to take a taxi or rent a car. If you want to take public transit into Orlando, the best bet is to take a taxi or Uber from the airport to the SunRail commuter rail station in DeBary, which will take you into Orlando and also connects to regional Amtrak service. It's about 12 miles from the airport to the DeBary train platform.

Things to Do Near Orlando Sanford International Airport

Orlando Sanford International is close to Historic Downtown Sanford, a tourist area with art exhibits and interesting architecture as well as a good range of dining options. The airport also borders Lake Jesup and the Lake Monroe Conservation Area.

Of course, most visitors are heading to Orlando for DisneyWorld, Sea World or the Universal theme park (or maybe all of the above). All of these are located in central Orlando, much closer to Orlando International Airport.

Even if your final destination is closer to Orlando, Orlando Sanford might end up being the better airport choice, especially on busy tourism weekends. Orlando Sanford is always significantly less busy and the process of getting your bags and picking up your rental car is always much quicker and smoother there.

Also consider that Orlando Sanford has a very nice lounge that is usually not very busy. It's free to passengers flying out to the United Kingdom on Tui flights, but anyone else can access it for the day by paying $20.
