While buses 108 and 201 both connect the airport to Yerevan, a taxi ride from the airport to the city's center costs around $8 and will last approximately 20 minutes. Rental cars are also available and the Yerevan Metro has plans to link the city to the airport.

The sprawling expanse of Yerevan is usually the first sight greeting visitors. Stately buildings graced by Soviet-era monuments, modern cafes dotting the sidewalk and the bustle of traffic and city life provide a heady distraction to those wishing to explore the country's more esoteric regions. Lover's Park and Yerevan Zoo provide fresh green spaces while a visit to Erebuni Fortress provides an overview of the history of the city.

Venturing into the countryside, the impressive hilltop monasteries that are often more than a thousand years old capture visitors' imaginations. The best of these include Sanahin and Haghpat Monasteries on opposite peaks, whose ruins include an awe-inspiring trek from the Debed Canyon to visit. The Lake Sevan region boasts an enormous freshwater lake and includes a range of popular water sports to enjoy in addition to the spectacularly located Sevanavank Monastery. The numerous Ughtasar Petroglyphs in southern Armenia offer insight into the artistry of people living in the region thousands of years ago.

Travel Tips in Armenia

Summer temperatures can rise to the 90s during July and August. Winter plunges the country below freezing, with temperatures in the 20s for much of December and January, often with accompanying snowstorms. Winter visitors often take advantage of this by enjoying the excellent skiing on the peaks of Tsakhkadzor, a popular spa destination.

Warm temperatures make the festival of Vartavar a welcome event where participants pour buckets of water on anyone they can find to cleanse and bless them. Yerevan offers the High Fest Film Festival the first week of October that includes street performers, dancing and a carnival atmosphere.

A national favorite food is khingali, dumplings stuffed with cheese or meat fillings. A couple can expect to eat a three-course meal at a mid-range restaurant for around $20. Armenia's proximity to the Middle East results in many restaurants serving popular dishes like kebab or mezze. A cup of coffee and a delicious pastry will cost around $8 for two people.
