Acapulco International Airport (ACA)

Acapulco is served by Acapulco International Airport, also known as General Juan N. Álvarez International Airport. Cheap flights to Acapulco regularly arrive from Mexico City on Aeromar, Aeromexico, Volaris while United operate a route from Houston. There is just one main passenger terminal.

The airport is about 16 miles from the city of Acapulco. This distance can usually be covered in about half an hour. A taxi, which costs around $20, could be the quickest way to get to your hotel. An airport shuttle is also a convenient option. It goes by the name of Servico Colectivo, and you can pick it up right next to where the taxis are located. The charges for a colectivo ride are around $10. 

Attractions in Acapulco

The beach and watersports are among the biggest reasons people travel to Acapulco. You can sunbathe or swim at the Caleta and Caletilla beaches, and you can also catch a boat out to Isla de la Roqueta to kayak, snorkel or dive. A visit to the Clavadistas de la Quebrada can get you up close to witness experienced cliff divers who jump into the water from 80 feet high.

Anyone interested in culture and history can plan a trip to the Fort of San Diego, built in 1616; the Dolores Olmedo House, which features Diego Rivera murals; and Zocalo, the historic town square.

The area around La Costera road is where most hotels are located, right on the beach and close to the entertainment. Further south are several more exclusive and quieter hotels.

Hints and Tips for Visiting Acapulco

In the summer, temperatures can peak into the 90s, and in the winter, highs remain in the upper 80s. The summer months comprise the rainy season, and spring and winter are the busiest traveler seasons. The city is filled with bars and clubs, which are a big hit with college students. Thousands descend on the city in March and April, packing the beaches, restaurants, and nightspots. In December, travelers from both Mexico and abroad come to enjoy the warm weather during the holidays. If you're in town on December 12, you can watch colorful local celebrations paying homage to the Virgin of Guadalupe.

The hotels in the city center are based near restaurants, nightlife and beaches. Both business and leisure travelers can walk everywhere or take taxis, which are plentiful. 

Many restaurants feature local seafood. Cheap meals are less than $10, and more upscale restaurants serve dishes that cost around $20.
