Mammoth Lakes is a destination that caters to adventurous travelers, and the area offers outdoor activities year-round. Flights to Mammoth Lakes arrive at Mammoth Yosemite Airport (MMH), which is about 10 minutes away, and the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is a popular winter destination about 25 minutes from the airport by taxi. Boating and snowboarding are popular nearby outdoor activities, but there is also an active nightlife at wine bars and clubs downtown.

You can fly to Mammoth Yosemite Airport (MMH) on a direct flight from cities such as San Diego, San Francisco and Colorado during the winter and spring months, and flights to Mammoth Lakes from Los Angeles are available all year. Alaska Airlines and United Airlines are major carriers that provide these flights. Hotels are abundant in Mammoth Lakes with most being concentrated along Route 203, which becomes the town's Main Street. The Village at Mammoth is accessible from U.S. Route 395 and offers more than a dozen retailers and a variety of food options from fine dining to BBQ and desserts.

You will not run out of areas to explore with national parks like Yosemite, hot springs such as the Hot Creek Geological Site, and the ski area on Mammoth Mountain. A unique feature offered by Mammoth Mountain is the gondola that goes to the top of the mountain. One you arrive, there is an interpretive center at the summit with information about the volcanic and geologic history of the area. For a leisurely trip, enjoy a mountain tour at Mammoth Mountain where you can take photographs and learn inside information about the location.

If you want to mix exercise and sightseeing, there are several hiking and biking trails connected to the Minaret Vista, which offers a view for stargazing or looking at the spires of the Minarets, Mt. Banner and Mt. Ritter. If you want to spend some time indoors, you might wish to check out the local culture by visiting the Mono Arts Council Gallery, the Mammoth Museum at the Hayden Cabin or the Edison Theater.

The Reds Meadow shuttle system operates from around Mid-June to September and goes to Reds Meadow, Rainbow Falls and the Devils Postpile National Monument. It is advised to take this shuttle rather than a rental car to reduce traffic because there is only one lane up the mountain.

Hints and Tips
Some outdoor sites close due to winter weather, so between June and October is the best time to visit if you are interested in hiking, horseback riding or exploring the forests and national parks. If you are in Mammoth during the winter, expect snow and cold temperatures around 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Summers are often dry and very sunny with high temperatures in the 70s.

You may want to plan your trip around events like the Mammoth Festival of Beers and Bluesapalooza in August, invitationals and qualifiers for winter sports from December to April, and motocross and fishing activities in June and July.
