Ponciano Arriaga International Airport is located on the Matehuala Highway, about 15 miles from downtown. Car rental and taxis are available from the terminal, and hotels usually provide shuttle service. Taxis into town cost around $25 and about half that amount to go from town to the airport. Public bus transportation is about a mile from the main terminal at Terrestre Potosina where you can find buses into town as well as interstate buses.

San Luis's accommodations in the city center tend to cater to the backpacker. Many of the more upscale hotels are located near the main highways or the bus station. Due to its high altitude, the city experiences only a few hot days each year in this subtropical region, with summer temperatures typically staying in the low 80s. The bulk of the city’s precipitation is seen from May through October.

The favorite local dish consists of bright orange fried enchiladas known as potosinas. These are often served fried with refried beans and guacamole.
