When you fly to Tehran, you'll arrive at the Tehran Imam International Airport (IKA), which is located about 34 miles away from the city's center. Tehran is a very large and cosmopolitan city and is Iran's capital. The Azadi Tower, built to celebrate the Persian empire's 2,500th anniversary, is an icon of the city and houses its own museum. If that strikes your fancy, you'll be glad to know there are more than 50 museums in Tehran. One, the Treasury of the National Jewels, displays an astounding and expansive collection of jewels, including the world's largest uncut ruby and much more.

Flights to Tehran arrive at the Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA), which has one main passenger terminal that handles an average of 6.5 million travelers each year. Transportation into the city from the airport is available by rental car, bus or taxi by traveling along the Tehran-Qom Freeway, which is connected to the airport by taking an airport access road. People are also able to take a shuttle bus from the airport to the nearest metro station if they prefer. Within the terminal, facilities include currency change stations, free Wi-Fi access in certain areas, a Persian restaurant, coffee and snack shops, duty-free shopping and prayer areas. A few international hotels opened near the airport in 2015. Tehran itself is a large metropolitan city sprawling at the base of the Alborz mountains.

At the National Museum of Iran, visitors can see artifacts dating back 5,000 years to ancient Persia. Included among the displays is the Salt Man, an ancient prince who was mummified within a salt mine for more than 2,000 years with fully intact clothing and jewelry. There is a recreational area on the top of Mount Tochal, which includes hiking trails, a gymnasium and a ski resort. You can get to the top by taking the Tochal gondola lift up the mountain. The best places to stay in Tehran are in the more modern northern portion of the city near the Golestan Palace, another major attraction that was a royal complex for centuries.

The most important annual holiday celebrated in Tehran is the city's celebration of the Iranian New Year, or Nowruz. It is held each March 20 and lasts for 12 days. Popular types of entertainment in Tehran include going to one of the city's numerous cafes to drink tea, smoke and socialize. The city offers both Persian cuisine as well as international offerings such as Italian food. The average cost for a decent restaurant meal for two people in the expat region of the city is $39, which includes the cost of both the meal and drinks. Business travelers especially should be aware that the use of credit cards is not widespread in Tehran, so they will need to exchange money at a currency exchange. The city has a very dry climate. You can expect average highs that range from 46 degrees in January to 98 degrees in July.
