The Republic of Guyana is small country located on South America’s northern coastline, making it the only non-island part of the Caribbean. The Netherlands originally colonized the country, followed by the United Kingdom before it gained independence in 1970. Guyana is the only country on the continent that uses English as its official spoken language, though most residents also speak Guyanese Creole.
With a tropical climate and a vast rainforest landscape, this South American treasure is one of the lesser-known tourist zones in the region. Those who do visit are awarded with amazing scenery, especially stunning views of the country’s many waterfalls.

Cheddi Jagan is Guyana’s sole international airport. Previously known as Timehri International, it is based 25 miles to the south of Georgetown, the country’s capital city. The airport was first used by the United States as a military facility during World War II, after which terminals were constructed and it was opened for use to the public.
Cheddi Jagan is currently in the final phases of a substantial modernization and expansion project, one that has cost the government a sheer $150 million. A new 2-mile long runway and additional terminal building are in the works, with completion slated for August of 2015.
Over 600,000 foreign and domestic passengers fly through the country each year. Caribbean Airways and Surinam Airways are the only airliners that offer direct flights to Guyana from the United States, while Copa and Insel Air cater to the international tourist market.
What to Do in Guyana Kaieteur Falls trumps Niagara Falls in size. This amazing waterfall is five times as high as its North American counterpart, and day trip plane tours are offered from Georgetown. Orinduik Falls is quite smaller than Kaieteur, but still worth a look!
Beachgoers and wildlife lovers alike will adore the sights at Shell Beach, where hundreds of turtles come to lay their eggs each year. The Merume Mountains, Kumerau Falls, and 52 Drop Falls are other famous attractions to check out on your trip!
Getting around Guyana: Tips for Tourists
The lodging in Guyana is quite good, especially if you plan to stay in Georgetown. From quaint guesthouses to luxury villas, there is something for everyone’s travel budget.
Never drink the tap water in the country; stick with bottled water instead. Given the heightened risk of malaria (as is the case in many Caribbean countries), it would be a good idea to procure anti-malarial medication.
The Guyanese dollar is the official currency. Local exchange banks are available close to the airport.
