The Airports in Houston and San Francisco
Two airports serve the Houston area. George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is the largest airport in Houston and the second busiest in Texas. Located 23 miles north of downtown Houston, IAH has five terminals. Airlines that fly to San Francisco include Alaska Airlines, Frontier Airlines, and United. Both Frontier and United offer non-stop flights from IAH. William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is the other airport in Houston, located eleven miles from the city center. Although Hobby Airport does not offer direct flights to San Francisco, it offers numerous connecting flights from American Airlines, Delta, and Southwest Airlines.
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is located 13 miles south of San Francisco. SFO is the second busiest airport in California and has four terminals. When you arrive, SFO offers a variety of options to take you into the city. The quickest overall mode of transportation is by taxi, which can be accessed at the roadway center islands on the baggage claim level of all terminals. San Francisco also has a rapid rail service that operates from the Garage G/BART Station stop at SFO. You could also take the bus, arrange for ride-sharing, or reserve a charter to get to the city. If you prefer to drive yourself, car rental services are available.
What to Know When Departing From Houston
Plan to arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes to two hours before your scheduled flight to allow time for parking, check-in, and security screening. Both airports in the Houston Airport System utilize Advanced Imaging Technology, which scans travelers without physical contact. Passengers can decline AIT screening and opt for an enhanced pat down. Be aware that a government-issued photo-ID is required before boarding your flight.
What to Do While You Wait to Board Your Flight
If you have some time before boarding, take advantage of the numerous amenities the Houston Airport System has to offer.
