Cheap Flights from New York (NYC) to Munich (MUC)

Well over 100 flights depart daily from New York's various airports to Munich International Airport. You'll see the widest range of options from Newark Liberty International and JFK, but there are regular departures from LaGuardia too, mostly with Air Canada and Delta. The vast majority of departures from all of the airports have one stop en route, but it is possible to get non-stop service with United (departing from Newark Liberty). A non-stop flight is about eight hours, but many of the flights with one stop only have a short layover somewhere in Europe and can take as little as 9.5 hours total.

Facilities at Munich Airport

Munich International is actually just southeast of the city of Freising, and is about a half an hour's drive to the northwest of Munich. The airport has direct connections to the S-Bahn rail line, located at the end of the S1 and S8 lines (both of which travel to Hauptbahnhof Central Station in Munich). Each line takes a little under an hour to get to downtown Munich from the airport. Inter-city bus service is also available directly from the airport with Flixbus and Lufthansa. During some trade fairs the Munich Trade Fair Shuttle may also be available.

Most of the best amenities in the Munich airport are concentrated in Terminal 2's new satellite facility, which opened in 2016. Passengers can enjoy quiet zones with reclining chairs, charging stations, free WiFi throughout the terminal and shower facilities among other perks. There are also 11 total Lufthansa lounges throughout Terminal 2. Free coffee, tea and newspapers are also available to all passengers at stations throughout this terminal.

Many dining options are also available throughout the airport. Regional favorites such as sausage, schnitzel and strudel are plentiful, of course along with good local beer. There is a good range of other options too, everything from Burger King to fine dining. Unlike many airports, you won't find inflated prices on food here, as a local law forbids airport retailers from setting their prices higher than what comparable downtown establishments are charging.

Terminal 2 is for airlines in the Star Alliance group, while Terminal 1 is for all those that are not. The two terminals are connected by the Munich Airport Center area, which contains a shopping mall and conference center. Free WiFi is available throughout both terminals, as well as free computer terminals that can be used for 20 minutes at a time.

Things to Do Near Munich International Airport

There's not much of interest directly near Munich International, and most passengers with a short layover opt to simply enjoy the comforts of Terminal 2 (which is consistently voted at or near the top of passenger satisfaction surveys for all airports in the world). If you want to venture out, however, it's easy to hop on the S1 or S8 train line and go to a variety of interesting destinations.

Travel into Munich to the central square area of Marienplatz to see historic architecture and statues, and if you're passing through in December don't miss the famous Christmas Market held here. Automotive enthusiasts will definitely want to check out the BMW Museum, home to everything from historic aircraft to futuristic car prototypes.
