Cheap Flights to the Caribbean Netherlands
Comprised of the pretty islands of Saba, Sint Eustatius, and Bonaire, the Caribbean Netherlands are famous for their impeccable diving locations. The island of Saba features wall diving along its rocky coastline. Bonaire has reef diving often conveniently located close to the shoreline. Travelers can fly to the Caribbean Netherlands via Flamingo International Airport (BON), F.D. Roosevelt Airport (EUX), or Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport (SAB).
Flights to the Caribbean Netherlands
Bonaire's pink stucco airport, Flamingo International Airport (BON), is located in its capital, Kralendijk. Services in the single terminal facility are basic but include a few shops, ATMs, free Wi-Fi, restaurants, and a VIP lounge. There are car rental kiosks in the Arrivals hall and a minivan system that functions as the local bus. Taxi fare from the airport to Kralendijk is a fixed rate of $10.
Visitors who fly to the Caribbean Netherlands via Sint Eustatius will land at F.D. Roosevelt Airport (EUX). There is one terminal with basic services and free Wi-Fi. The airport is located less than a mile from the center of the capital, Oranjestad. There are rental cars available for transport around the island. Taxi fare must be negotiated with individual drivers.
Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport (SAB), located in Saba, has a single terminal with basic facilities. Taxi fare is fixed at $25 for the 4-mile ride from the airport to Saba's capital, The Bottom. There are no car rental facilities available at the airport, but they can be found in The Bottom or Windwardside.
Attractions in the Caribbean Netherlands
Bonaire's small size makes many of its sights accessible by foot. There is ancient rock art from the island's original inhabitants in a cave at Boca Onima inlet. The real draw of the island is its reefs, where hundreds of species of fish dart among the coral. Tori's Reef and Red Beryl are perfect for shallow dives.
In Sint Eustatius, the island's dramatic and dormant volcano, The Quill, provides excellent hiking and sightseeing opportunities. There's also the Sint Eustatius Historical Foundation Museum in Oranjestad that details the island's history.
Saba's lush hills are the tallest in all the Netherlands-owned lands. Avid hikers will find a trailhead in Windwardside that leads to the top of Mt. Scenery. The island's underwater cliffs, like those at the Pinnacle dive sites, offer spectacular diving.
Travel Tips for the Caribbean Netherlands
The islands of the Caribbean Netherlands have an equatorial climate with very little variation in temperature. Daytime temperatures hover in the 80s year-round. Bonaire experiences a rainy season from October to January, but rain falls only at night. Saba celebrates Carnival in July with dancing and parades.
The cuisine in the Caribbean Netherlands is based around their access to fresh seafood. Conch, rock lobster, and even cactus find their way into local specialties. There are also Dutch restaurants serving familiar favorites on each of the islands. Travelers should bring cash as many of the businesses and restaurants do not accept credit cards. A meal for two in a midrange restaurant will cost around $35-$50 depending on the island.
