Advice to Tourists Visiting China
You’ll need a valid passport and a visa to visit China. For most Western nationalities, tourist visas are relatively simple and inexpensive, but should be obtained in advance of travel. The language barrier can seem impenetrable, but even a few phrases of Mandarin will be invaluable. Try to learn a little before you go, and carry a phrasebook or translation app.
The complex topography of the country makes generalizations about climate pointless, but September through October is a popular time to travel, with low humidity and comfortable temperatures.
Tipping in China is not generally accepted or advised, and attempts may result in worried waitstaff running after you to return “forgotten” money. The major exception is group tour guides and drivers catering to foreigners, who may rely almost entirely on tips.
