Making your way to Atlanta Hartsfield

ATL is a hive of activity, and can be overwhelming if you’re not prepared. Happily, the clever layout and experienced staff all contribute to a smoother experience than you might expect. The two terminals, Domestic and International, flank seven parallel concourses, and all the buildings are linked by the fast, free Plane Train. You’ll take care of all ticketing, check-in and baggage tasks at the terminal, and then you’ll be whisked away to your concourse. If you’re driving, pay special attention to the entrances from the interstate: the Domestic and International terminals each have their own exit, and choosing the wrong one can add a lot of time and stress. The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MARTA) city rail system links directly to the airport, making public transportation a valid option. The trip takes around 20 minutes from downtown, and drops you right at the baggage claim. Airport trains run every 15 to 20 minutes, from 4:45 am to 1 am weekdays and 6:00 am to 1 am on weekends, and the fare is $2.50.

Arriving in Jacksonville

Jacksonville is somewhat off the beaten track, and it breaks the usual Florida mold. It’s not an amusement park mecca, it’s not a beach town, and it’s not a flashy party spot.

Often overlooked, Jacksonville abounds with uncharted gems and a sense of discovery that’s harder to come by in the state’s more established tourist destinations. Lovers of culture will be glad to know that the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens and the Museum of Contemporary Art both have considerable collections and lively event calendars.

The city has its own Jazz and Blues festivals to rival any in the country, and for history buffs, the Kingsley Plantation (free admission) offers an unusual look at a bygone South.
