Phoenix is huge, spanning many districts. In its rapid growth, it has swallowed many suburbs, so you’ll want a car to get around, and what you do will largely depend on where you’re staying. According to locals, there are a few must-sees, no matter what. First, hike the trail in the McDowell Mountains. This city is so huge it has a mountain range within the city limits, and once you get to the top, you can see for many miles. Next, there’s really nothing like the desert at night, but it can be a forbidding place: see it in safety at the Desert Botanical Gardens, which offers “flashlight tours” at certain times of the year. Finally, the Phoenix Art Museum is always a great way to spend the afternoon: it has a focus on vibrant contemporary art.
