Whether you’re living out your spring break fantasies or looking for a nice family vacation, Cancun promises a great time to all. In addition to beautiful beaches, Cancun offers rich culture and history, as well as a bustling nightlife and several quirky locations, including an underwater museum. Before you plan your trip, consider these destinations to make the most of your vacation.
1. Discover history at Chichen Itza
Cancun has several sites that allow visitors to travel back in time and explore ancient cities. Topping this list is Chichen Itza, a Mayan city that dates back to the period before Christopher Columbus. While you’re there, be sure to visit the Kukulkan Pyramid, or El Castillo, which was designated as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
2. Admire sculptures under the sea at Museo Subacuático de Arte (MUSA)
This truly one-of-a-kind experience allows people to snorkel and scuba dive to admire over 500 sculptures located in the underwater museum. Not only does the site encourage culture, it also supports science. The sculptures are made from materials that promote coral life, allowing marine life to interact with and even inhabit the exhibit. With two galleries to explore, MUSA makes a fun, quirky day trip you’ll never forget.
3. Enjoy the sun and surf at Playa Delfines

The list would not be complete without one of the most popular destinations for people visiting Cancun — the beach. However, unlike many other popular beaches in the area, Playa Delfines is known for its tranquility. Less crowded than some of the more commercial beaches, it’s an ideal escape from throngs of tourists and partying beachgoers. Plus, the view is spectacular. And if you tire of sun and sand, you can check out the nearby El Rey Ruins.

4. Swim with dolphins at Dolphin Discovery
If you love the idea of bonding with these aquatic friends, Dolphin Discovery is a crucial destination to add to your itinerary. Dolphin Discovery offers several different programs, including the chance to swim with dolphins and interact with manatees and sea lions. The programs are available for all ages, and there are options for those not comfortable swimming, making this an ideal family spot.
5. Cool off at Xel-Há
This “natural aquarium” will allow you to get up close and personal to the exhibits. Rather than tapping at fish behind glass, you can snorkel and swim with the variety of fish that inhabit the area, or simply walk around and admire the grounds. For those looking for a little more adventure, there is a zipline that allows you to dive in at the end and a floating bridge, not to mention to Cliff of Courage, where guests are invited to make their way to the top then jump into the waters below.
6. Plan a weekend getaway at the Isla Mujeres
If you decide you need a vacation from your vacation, Isla Mujeres is the place to go. This tiny island is located just across the Bahia de Mujeres, but provides an entirely different atmosphere than fast-paced Cancun. This fishing village is quieter and slower-paced, perfect for a relaxing day on the beach or exploring the several blocks that make up downtown. There are also a few historic sites for visitors to explore, not to mention a turtle farm for animal lovers.
7. Party it up at Coco Bongo
Rather than hitting a typical club, consider spending a night at Coco Bongo, where you’ll be met with endless performances that range from acrobatic stunts to Elvis impersonators. You and your fellow travelers can dance the night away while enjoying a variety of acts that will make typical bars seem like a bore. Fair warning, this spot is particularly popular on weekends, so you may want to consider visiting during the week, when you can beat the crowds.
8. Have a posh night out at Mandala Nightclub
If you want to finish off your night with class, head to the Mandala Nightclub. Known to attract a “cosmopolitan crowd,” this beautifully designed club will leave you feeling like a VIP, whether you make it to the VIP section or not. Keep in mind that Wednesday is Ladies night, making it the perfect mid-week destination for your girl’s night out.
