The Super-Commuters
Everyone knows that people in Silicon Valley work hard, but Curt von Badinski, a co-founder of a San Francisco-based tech company goes the distance, literally. His commute from his home in Los Angeles takes six hours every day.
Five days a week, he heads to Bob Hope Burbank airport where he catches a 90-minute flight to Oakland via Surf Air. Once he arrives in San Francisco, he drives his hybrid car to get to the office. The only reason he’s able to afford this daily commute is because Surf Air offers unlimited flights on a single-engine turboprop plane, for a monthly fee. Getting up at 5am and returning home at 9pm likely won’t appeal to many people, but von Badinski loves it.

Mary Beth Williams has a more practical deal with her employer. Based in Chicago, Beth Williams was recruited for a healthcare executive job in Boston. The job was a perfect fit, but she only accepted the offer when her employer agreed to fly her home every week. During the week, she stays in a rental apartment with a roommate to keep costs down.
Although Beth Williams is traveling a lot and spends more time on the road than at home, she felt that it wasn’t much different than when she had to travel for meetings at her previous job. Originally the gig was meant to last six months, but four years later, Mary still loves being a super-commuter.
What jobs allow you to be commute by plane?
Commuting by plane on a daily basis won’t be practical for most people or employers. However, frequent travel is necessary for some jobs. There’s no set position that will guarantee you all that extra travel, but there are a few jobs that you could look for that have travel in the job description.
Sales
If you’re working for a company with branches or clients located across the country, then you may need to fly on a regular basis to close any deals that you’re working on. Keep in mind that the amount of travel you do also depends on your title. A regional sales manager may take care of an entire state or multiple countries depending on their employer.
Public Relations
Depending on your clients and what business they’re in, traveling may be expected for PR professionals. You might be launching a new product in Las Vegas one day or putting on a public event the next in Miami. Travel can be a lot of fun, but a lot of work comes with it.
Management Consultant
When you’re in the business of telling other businesses how to run more efficiently, you better believe you’ll be doing a lot of travel. Generally speaking, management consultants fly out once a week and return home for some R&R. If your client has multiple locations, you may end up flying to more than one city in the same week.
Public Auditors
Similar to management consultants, public auditors may see a fair amount of travel based on their clients. Since their job is to analyze the financials, it’s expected for you to work out of your client’s office. The travel may sound appealing, but expect to work long hours since you’ll be dealing with money.
Is flying to work practical?
In most cases, flying to work doesn’t make much sense. However, it may work for you in special circumstances. If flights from your home city to where your job is located is inexpensive, then flying back once a week is doable. However, those costs still add up, so it’s really only worth it if your employer is willing to cover that cost. You also need a place to stay (unless your employer is also paying for hotels) while you’re in town, so don’t forget to factor in that cost too.
Now, if you’re traveling frequently for business, then you really don’t have a choice. Flying to work is required for you to perform your duties, so you won’t get much say in the matter. If you’re only flying once or twice a month, then it’s very manageable. However, some people may tire of it eventually since it can be difficult to find a work life balance with so much travel involved.
It’s really up to you to decide if you would ever fly to work. It may sound luxurious and you may be compensated well for your time, but it really comes down to a lifestyle choice.
