From renting a car to only book your first night’s stay, below are the tools you need to plan the smart way while still leaving plenty of room for spontaneity.

Quicklook: Road Trip Hacks

  • Tip 1 – Rent a Car
  • Tip 2 – Upgrade at the Counter
  • Tip 3 – Look at Your Rewards
  • Tip 4 – Pack Snacks, A Cooler, Etc.
  • Tip 5 – Pick Out Places to Eat
  • Tip 6 – Only Book Your First Night Stop
  • Tip 7 – Use The Skyscanner App

Tip 1 – Rent a Car

There’s no need to add the miles, and the wear and tear on your personal car when you can rent one. Opt for a vehicle that has better gas mileage, so you’re actually saving money on gas in the long run. Before your trip, you won’t need to pay to have your own car thoroughly examined for maintenance issues. If your car breaks down on the road, you also won’t have to worry about paying hundreds of dollars to fix it right then and there.

Rental cars are also much newer models, so they shouldn’t break down. However, go ahead and check that your rental car rate includes roadside assistance. If not, double-check with your insurance. If you want to be a bit more comfortable on the road, you can always choose a newer, cooler model with awesome features. You can find current car rental discounts offered here.

Tip 2 – Upgrade at the Counter

When you arrive at the rental car agency, definitely inquire about upgrades and better rates. Ask if there are any cars on the lot that the agency has a surplus of, and that could score you a better rate, too.  When asking for an upgrade, keep in mind that you might be paying more than your original reservation by a few dollars. If you’re willing to pay a little more at the counter, it will still cost you much less instead of booking the nicer car to begin with.

Tip 3 – Look at Your Rewards

Before booking your rental car, see what kinds of rewards the rental car agency is offering for signing up as a member. Many credit cards offer generous rewards based on how many points you have as well. AAA members can also receive up to 20% off base rates with Hertz, so make sure you apply your designated discount code upon booking. If you’re not a member, nor do you have a credit card, you may want to consider it before your trip.

Tip 4 – Pack Snacks, A Cooler, Etc.

You’re most likely going to be in the car for long periods of time, so make sure you plan accordingly. Pack a cooler to keep in your trunk or backseat so you can easily access your favorite beverages and snacks. Stopping for food unnecessarily will take away from spending money on things you actually want to buy. Packing your own snacks will also prevent you from getting fast food.

Tip 5 – Pick Out Places to Eat

Your road trip can easily be mapped out by picking the restaurants you want to visit ahead of time. Use Skyscanner to research the top restaurants in each location to help you with your planning. Many towns have famous roadside diners, but there also might be a hidden gem that locals rave about. By researching ahead of time, you’ll spend less time finding restaurants on the road.

Tip 6 – Only Book Your First Night Stop

Take time to really plan out your first stop, but from there, be spontaneous with your route. Sometimes, planning less leads to more adventure, and more adventure can create a road trip that you will never forget. If you decide you really like a stop, you’ll have the freedom to stay there longer, versus pre-booking hotels and having to leave a town before you’re ready. Plus, if you intend to visit one town, but decide to go a different direction instead, you can!

Tip 7 – Use The Skyscanner App

Skyscanner is full of useful information that will immensely aid in your planning. By using the everywhere search, you can find the cheapest flights, best car rentals, highest rated hotels, and even find some locations off-beaten path. Skyscanner is a powerful tool when it comes to planning trips, so use it to your advantage.
