Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP) is the largest and busiest airport in Honduras, and sees 742,000 passengers each year. Delta, American, Spirit and United all offer some direct flights to Honduras, and the national airline of neighboring Colombia, Avianca, also offers flights from Miami and New York.
A new terminal is being built at the moment, but the current facilities are convenient enough. SAP offers short, affordable connecting flights to some of the major tourist attractions and cities in Honduras, which may be the most safest and most efficient way to travel around the country.
Stuff to do in Honduras
You can marvel at the majesty off ancient Mayan ruins in Copán, or spend an afternoon reveling in the decaying colonial grandeur of Comayagua, with its fine cathedral.
The long Caribbean coast offers endless white sand beaches and general tropical bliss. The nearby Bay Islands are an incredible destination for diving and snorkeling, with the world’s second largest coral reef.
Many travelers visiting Honduras like to combine their vacations with volunteer opportunities. Wildlife care and conservation, special education, and health projects are all worthy causes, and it’s possible to find all-inclusive programs.
Advice to Tourists Visiting Honduras
You’ll need a passport to visit, but citizens of most western countries will not need a visa. Use common sense at all times regarding valuables and do not walk alone at night, even for very short distances. Bottled water is recommended.
The language here is Spanish, and levels of English fluency are very low outside of metropolitan areas. You’ll have a better visit if at least one member of your party speaks some Spanish. At a minimum you should carry a phrasebook or translation app.
The currency is the Lempira, but US dollars are accepted just about anywhere. Bring new, clean notes, in small denominations.
The temperature is generally hot and humid all year, with variations in climate relating more to altitude than to season. Rainy seasons also vary by location, so when you visit will be dictated by your destination within the country.
