Making your way to Atlanta Hartsfield

This is the busiest airport in the world: it’s topped the list every year since 2000. Happily, the enormous volume of passenger traffic is old hat to the airport staff and they manage to run ATL like a well-oiled machine.

If you’re looking for a public transportation option to get to ATL, try the city rail, which runs trains to the airport every 15 to 20 minutes from 4:45 am to 1 am weekdays and 6:00 am to 1 am on weekends. Tickets cost $2.50. You can also catch one of several MARTA buses which serve the airport, depending on your point of origin.

The airport layout is intelligent and not hard to navigate, as long as you’re clear about your gate. Atlanta Hartsfield consists of two giant main terminals. One serves domestic passengers and the other international passengers. In between these two terminals are seven parallel concourses.

The whole airport is connected by the free, automated, and fast Plane Train. You’ll have free WiFi access all over the airport, as well as the option of using ATL’s complementary TRAK-A-FLIGHT service, an app which sends flight status and security wait time estimates right to your mobile device. If you’re bringing a four-legged travel companion, you’ll be glad to know that the airport is well served with facilities and relief areas for pets, featuring a 1000 square foot fenced-in dog park.

Arriving in Charleston

This beautiful old seaport town is full of historical treasures. Maybe it’s something about that slow southern style, but Charleston really can seem frozen in time. When you’re strolling down the lamp-lit avenues on a warm summer’s evening, it may feel like you’ve stepped back in time with sound is muted by the curtains of Spanish moss hanging from the trees and every block is full of gorgeously restored mansions.

All the most charming sights in Charleston share something of that magic. For the full experience, hire a horse-drawn carriage tour, and see the city in style. Save at least half a day for a visit to the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, which has guided historical tours, a petting zoo, and botanical gardens, including a swamp, where otters play and alligators lurk.
