London Airports: Cost, Distance and City Access

Luton (LTN): Known for low-cost flights, you’ll often find bargain airfare going to and from London Luton. 35 miles northwest of London, the journey to the city center requires a shuttle bus transfer to the Luton Airport Parkway train station, where you can then take an East Midlands Train or Thameslink to central London. The whole trip from Luton takes about 40 minutes.

London City Airport: the closest airport to central London, at just 6 miles east of the city center and 3 miles from Canary Wharf, the single-runway City Airport is just 22 minutes from London. This makes it ideal for business travel, and the small size means you’re hard-pressed to find a direct flight from Barcelona.

Heathrow (LHR): 20 miles west of London, and one of the world’s busiest. Flights to Heathrow tend to be more pricey than if you were to fly into one of the other five airport options, though Heathrow is closer to the city center. The Heathrow Express is the fastest way to get to central London from the airport.

Gatwick (LGW): 28 miles south of London—another common option for the trip from Barcelona. A shorter 30-minute train ride into London

Stansted (STN): 40 miles northeast of London and the third-busiest UK airport. Flight traffic to and from this airport is mostly between other European destinations and a few Mediterranean cities, so it’s a popular one for the Barcelona-London journey. A 47-minute trip into the city center by train.

Southend (SEN): 53 minutes away from central London by train, Southend is one of the longer journeys into the city, but also hosts some cheaper airlines—you may just be able to find some seriously bargain airfare from Barcelona.

More information on getting into central London:

As noted above, London’s six main airports offer a bevy of different transportation options into the city. If trains aren’t your style, there’s also the National Express coach service, taxi service and rental cars are available.

Pro tip: buy a Visitor Oyster travel smartcard in advance, and you’ll be all set for the most cost-effective way to get around London. The card covers rides on the Tube, buses, DLR, London Overground and most National Rail lines.

Once in London:

Stunning architecture, pubs and historical tours await. Go full tourist by checking out Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus or Westminster Abbey, and don’t forget to take in a performance from the London theater scene, touted to be the best in the world.
