Tocumen International is the country and region’s largest and busiest airport. Situated in its capital of Panama City, Tocumen underwent a massive renovation project in 2006, in order to provide large-scale facility updates and modernize the airport for its large passenger base.
It is the only airport in Central America to feature two, continually operational runways. A $21 million expansion of the main terminal included the addition of new boarding gates, which has since allowed for an increased number of international flights. Albrook “Marcos A. Gelabert” is the country’s second busiest airport, and together the two transported close to 10 million passengers in 2013!
Direct flights to Panama from the United States can be reserved via United, Delta, American Airlines, Copa, and Spirit Airlines, while international tourists are free to select from Aeromexico, US Airways, Avianca, KLM, Air France, and TAME.
What to Do in Panama
You don’t have to drive a cargo ship to enjoy the Panama Canal. Built in 1914, this historic site is 50 miles long, and consists of three locks for raising and lowering the boats that pass through its gates.
A bike ride down Amadour Causeway (located close to the canal) offer scenic views of the ocean and the three connected, corresponding islands. The Americas’ oldest city, Casco Viejo, is worth a look as well. Witness vintage Spanish architecture and enjoy your time eating at the local restaurants!
Advice for Tourists Visiting Panama
Room and board accommodations are ultra-cheap, with the average cost of a budget hotel being $40. The food in Panama is just as inexpensive yet extremely delicious, just remember to eat local to save your spending bills! Take the public bus system instead of a taxi when travelling, and carry small denominations when shopping. Although it is referred locally as the Balboa, the country uses the U.S. dollar as its only currency. The official spoken language is Spanish, but English is widely recognized.
